Located in the Andaman Sea, off the West coast of Thailand, The Similan Islands are thought to have inherited their name from the Malay word 'sembilan' meaning "nine". This is because the Similans Archipelago consists of a group of nine granite boulder islands. Above the water, the topography is stunning; tropical vegetation tops the islands, giving way to granite boulders or white sandy beaches, all surrounded by crystal clear, warm water. However, it is what lies beneath the surface that allows the Similans to lay claim to being one of Thailand and Asia's top scuba diving liveaboard destinations.

Maps & Itinerary

This 4 night Thailand liveaboard adventure combines the Similans with Kon Bon, Koh Tachai and  reaches northwards as far as Richelieu Rock and the Surin Islands.

Diving in Thailand should be on the agenda for every diver. With interesting topography created by the rocky boulders, alongside excellent marine life, it is easy to see why.

The Similan & Surin Islands are best reached by liveaboard dive boat and this 4 night scuba diving itinerary allows up to 14 dives, including up to 3 sunset / night dives. Sharks, marbled whip rays, turtles, harlequin shrimp and wondrous soft corals all await the eager diver.

On a typical day we offer up to 4 day dives although, where possible, the 4th dive may be substituted for a night dive when the boat is anchored within a lagoon. The diving day is typically scheduled as follows:

  • Light Breakfast followed by a briefing and Dive 1
  • Full Breakfast, relaxation period, briefing and Dive 2
  • Lunch, relaxation period, briefing and Dive 3
  • Snack relaxation period, briefing and Dive 4, where possible
  • Dinner

The entire experience aboard the Junk is absolutely wonderful. Diving groups are kept small so that the divemasters can focus on everyone's enjoyment. They modified our trip in August so that we had 3 days of excellent dives despite some choppy waves, The crew of the Junk is very attentive to our dive equipment and prepared delicious meals every day.

Johnathan and crew made the best of a stormy week and rough seas. Customer service on the boat was first class and meals were for royalty. Even though the number of available dive sites were limited by the weather, we still saw most of the marine life on the ID slate. Great trip! Front office was tough to get a hold of and their database was malfunctioning.
